# Quit a game

How to leave a game so it saves properly, and what to do if an emulator hangs.

1. Hold **Select + Start** to open the [Quick Menu](/playing/quick-menu.md).
2. Highlight **Quit game** and **hold A** until the ring fills.

## What Kouch does

Kouch quits the way you would. It **asks the emulator to close**, so the emulator can finish writing your save, and waits. The screen shows **Closing \<game>**. Most emulators close within a few seconds, and you're back where you were in Kouch, on the same game.

If the emulator doesn't close:

* After a few seconds (5 by default; an emulator's profile can set its own time), Kouch closes it for you.
* If you're still waiting after 10 seconds, a red **Force quit** button appears. Hold **A** on it to end the emulator at once.

**Force quit** ends the emulator without letting it save. Anything since your last save may be lost. Only use it when the emulator is stuck.

## Other ways a game ends

* **You quit from the emulator's own menu:** Kouch notices and comes back.
* **You close Kouch's window during a game:** Kouch quits the game the same careful way first, then closes.
* **Exit Kouch** in the main menu isn't available while a game runs. Quit the game first.
