# The Quick Menu

Hold Select + Start in any game for players, save states, screenshots, controller tools and quitting.

The Quick Menu opens over any game Kouch started. **Hold Select + Start together for a second.** Hold them again to close it.

![The Quick Menu over a game](https://3008865259-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiaV8VKDYJngjWWkPZx0Q%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-27cb80094f8d451db9a4a3722e402ddd843d139c%2Fquick-menu.png?alt=media)

* Only a player with a seat can open it.
* While it's open, **the game is paused** and **controllers drive the menu instead of the game**. Closing the menu resumes it. In an online game it isn't paused, since the other players are still playing.
* **B** goes back one step, and closes the menu from its first page. **Start** closes it from anywhere, and so does **Resume game**, the first item.
* It opens on the left of the game's screen. At the top: **NOW PLAYING**, the game, its system, how long it's been on, and a chip for each seated player.
* It works however the game was started, including straight from its tile in Steam's library.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Use borderless fullscreen.** An emulator in *exclusive* fullscreen can hide the Quick Menu. Kouch's emulator profiles use borderless fullscreen, so this only matters if you changed that yourself.
{% endhint %}

## Players

One box per seat, with the controller, its battery (or **Wired**, **Remote Play**) and its motion badge. Every player gets their own cursor here, so everyone can sort themselves out at once.

![The Players panel: one box per seat](https://3008865259-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiaV8VKDYJngjWWkPZx0Q%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c3b280484e40692a24c2e3eef86bd684d501d803%2Fquick-menu-players.png?alt=media)

* **A** (**Swap**) on your seat, then **A** on another seat, swaps the two players. **A** on the same seat cancels.
* **X** (**Motion**) turns motion on or off for the highlighted seat.

See [Players and seats](/controllers/players-and-seats.md) and [Motion](/controllers/motion.md).

## Game

![The Game panel](https://3008865259-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiaV8VKDYJngjWWkPZx0Q%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-ef333d414bc13322872310c9f7c9c612df32b30f%2Fquick-menu-game.png?alt=media)

* **Save state** and **Load state:** save the game exactly where you are, and go back to that point later.
* **Reset:** restart the game. It's a red button, so hold **A** to confirm.
* **Screenshot:** save a picture of the game.
* **Buttons the emulator's profile adds**, right after **Screenshot**, for example **Swap screens** or **Next layout** on a dual-screen handheld system. Press **A** and Kouch sends that shortcut to the emulator, then says, for example, **Swap screens: done**. They only show for emulators whose profile has them.
* **Invite friends**, and how many people are playing online, when you're in an online game.
* Actions added by your [plugins](/mods-and-plugins/plugins.md), such as more save slots.

Kouch shows **State saved**, **State loaded**, **Game reset** or **Screenshot saved** when it's done. See [Save states and screenshots](/playing/save-states-and-screenshots.md).

## Graphics

**Graphics** (*Resolution, filtering, V-Sync*) opens the running game's [Graphics](/playing/graphics.md) sheet. Settings that need a restart offer **Restart game to apply**: Kouch closes the game gracefully and starts it again, so save first if the game needs it.

## Controller tools

These act on the controller that opened the menu:

* **The controller for this game**, when the game has [one to choose](/playing/game-page.md#the-controller-for-this-game). A change applies when the game starts again, so **Restart game to apply** appears: Kouch closes the game properly and starts it again.
* **Rumble test:** a short buzz.
* **Recalibrate motion:** put the controller down on a flat surface first.
* **Disconnect:** turn off this controller's seat. Hold **A** to confirm.

## Invite and Netplay

* **Invite** opens Steam's invite window: to the emulator's netplay in an online game, otherwise to [Remote Play Together](/online/online/remote-play-together.md).
* **Netplay** shows the online session while one is running. You start one from the game's page. See [Online play](/online/online.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
**In the alpha,** Remote Play Together invites need Kouch's own Steam app, so they're off. Netplay between Kouch testers works.
{% endhint %}

**Connect phone** is greyed out: it's coming later.

## Quit game

**Quit game** is the red button at the bottom. Hold **A** to confirm. See [Quit a game](/playing/quit-a-game.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/playing/quick-menu.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
