# Per-game options

Change an emulator's settings for one game, or for every game, without opening the emulator.

Many emulators have settings people change often: resolution, aspect ratio, a frame-rate counter, volume. When an emulator's profile describes them, Kouch shows them as simple options you can set **for one game** or **for every game** on that emulator. Kouch writes them into the emulator's own settings each time the game starts.

## For one game

Open the game's page. The **Options** tab is the first one.

![The Options tab: the emulator and its options, grouped](https://3008865259-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiaV8VKDYJngjWWkPZx0Q%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6b003c092b474e5990e01ab2dbffa5dc166fbf7b%2Fgame-options.png?alt=media)

* **Emulator:** which of your emulators plays this game. Press **A** on one to choose it.
* The options, grouped under **Graphics**, **Controls**, **Audio**, **Multiplayer** and **Advanced** (a group only shows when it has options). **Controls** can hold [the controller for this game](/playing/game-page.md#the-controller-for-this-game), with its picture.
  * a **switch**: **A** turns it on or off;
  * a **choice**: **A** steps to the next value, **Left** / **Right** go back and forth;
  * a **slider**: **Left** / **Right**;
  * a **text box**: **A** to type (see [Typing with a controller](/controllers/typing.md)).

Changes are saved for this game straight away. When a game has any of its own settings, **Use the emulator's settings** clears them all, so the game goes back to the emulator-wide ones.

If an emulator's profile doesn't describe any options, the tab shows **This emulator has no options Kouch can set. It starts with:** and the command line Kouch starts it with.

## For every game on an emulator

Open **Settings › Emulators**, highlight the emulator and choose **Options**. These apply to every game on it. A game can still change any of them on its own page.

## Graphics

For graphics settings there's a dedicated sheet with presets and sections: [Graphics](/playing/graphics.md).

## Which setting wins

1. A game's own setting, when it has one.
2. Otherwise, the emulator-wide setting from **Settings › Emulators › Options**.
3. Otherwise, the profile's default.

{% hint style="info" %}
Kouch changes an emulator's settings file only at the moment a game starts. It backed the file up the first time, and **Settings › Emulators › Restore emulator config** puts the original back. See [Manage emulators](/emulators/emulators/manage-emulators.md).
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/playing/game-options.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
