# Mods

Turn mods on per game, set their load order, and import them. Mods are data only, and Kouch removes them after every session.

A **mod** changes a game while it plays: sharper textures, a widescreen patch, new music. Kouch turns mods on **per game**, puts them where the emulator looks just before the game starts, and **takes them away again when the game ends**. Your emulator's own folders stay clean.

Mods work for emulators whose profile says where their mods go. For others, a game's **Mods** tab says **its emulator doesn't support mods in Kouch yet**.

## Turn mods on for a game

Open the game's page and go to the **Mods** tab.

![A game's Mods tab](https://3008865259-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiaV8VKDYJngjWWkPZx0Q%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-f224392317d7536a00ebcc3505363f1cfb728779%2Fgame-mods.png?alt=media)

* Press **A** on a mod to turn it on or off.
* Mods that are on are numbered, in the order they load: **1. HD textures**, **2. Widescreen**. **Left** / **Right** on one moves it earlier or later.
* Each shows its description and version.
* A mod that contains programs or scripts is greyed out: **Can't be turned on: it contains programs or scripts**, with the files it found.

The pre-launch sheet (hold **A** on **Play**) shows how many mods are on.

## Get mods

* **From a `.kod` file:** open it like any `.kod` (drop it on the window, or **Settings › Emulators › Import profile**). Kouch shows **Import mods**, one switch per mod, all on. Choose **Import**. Then turn each one on per game.
* **From a folder:** copy a mod's folder into `Emulation\mods\`. A mod folder holds a `kouch-mod.json` and a `files` folder. See [Make a mod](/for-creators/creators/mods.md).
* **From the Workshop:** with Kouch's Steam release. See [Workshop](/steam/steam/workshop.md).

## What Kouch refuses

**Mods are data only.** Kouch refuses a whole mod if any part of it is a program or a script, a link, or anything aimed at a `system` or `bios` folder. It never overwrites a folder that's already where the mod would go.

## After the game

When the game ends, Kouch removes everything it put in place and switches the emulator's mod loading back. That happens even after a crash: if Kouch didn't get to clean up, it does so the next time it starts.

## Mods in online games

In [netplay](/online/online/netplay.md), the host's mods for the game are part of the lobby. Everyone who joins gets the same mods on for that session, if they have them. If someone's missing one, Kouch lists it before they join.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/mods-and-plugins/mods.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
