# Make a mod

Package a mod for Kouch, and say which games it's for.

A mod is a folder named after its id, with a small manifest and the files that go where the emulator looks for mods.

```
<id>/
  kouch-mod.json
  files/
    …exactly what goes into the emulator's mod folder for this mod
```

```json
{
  "id": "hd-textures",
  "name": "HD textures",
  "version": "1.0",
  "description": "Sharper textures.",
  "targets": {
    "profile": "my-emulator",
    "title_ids": ["<the game's title id>"],
    "game_hashes": ["<sha1 of the game file>"],
    "titles": ["<game file name without extension>"],
    "game_version": "1.0.2"
  }
}
```

* `targets` says which games offer the mod: the emulator profile, and the games by **title id** (the best choice: it's the same for every copy of the game), by the SHA-1 of their file, or by their file name, checked in that order. Leave it out to offer the mod for every game of an emulator that supports mods. (A game's SHA-1 is on its **Details** tab.)
* `game_version` is the version the mod was made for. It still applies to another version, and Kouch says which version it was made for.
* The emulator's profile decides where mods go and how they're switched on. See [Write an emulator profile › Mods](/for-creators/creators/emulator-profiles.md#mods).

## Rules

* **Data only.** A mod containing a program or script (`.exe`, `.dll`, `.bat`, `.sh`, PowerShell scripts, …), a link, or anything under a `system` or `bios` folder is refused as a whole.
* **No game files, BIOS, firmware or keys.** A mod changes a game you own; it never contains one.
* **Only what you made or may share.**

## Share it

* Put one or more mod folders under `mods/` in a `.kod` file. Kouch shows **Import mods** when someone opens it.
* Or share the folder, for people to copy into `Emulation\mods\`.
* With Kouch's Steam release: **Publish to Workshop**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/for-creators/creators/mods.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
