# ADR 0009: System and controller imagery inside Workshop themes

## Status

Accepted 2026-09-26. This is an explicit owner overrule of ground rule 1. It applies to **third-party Workshop content only**.

## Context

Ground rule 1: no third-party console brand names or imagery anywhere.

The owner wants three things:

* console and system images for emulators
* controller images on the connect screen
* Workshop themes that may carry that imagery

When offered "neutral + the user's own images, local only" or "also in Workshop themes", the owner picked "also in Workshop themes".

## Risk (recorded before any code, as ground rule 2's procedure requires)

Workshop items are hosted on Kouch's own Steam store page. If a Workshop theme carries the excluded platform holder's imagery, that holder could send a takedown to Kouch. That is the same kind of pressure that blocked an emulator's Steam release in 2023. The worst case is Kouch's store page or Workshop being pulled, not just the offending item.

## Decision

**Kouch itself** stays brand-free: its code, strings, docs, assets and built-in theme. It ships neutral in-house silhouettes and device art, and brand-lint still covers the whole repo.

**Users** may set their own image for any system or device. That image stays local and is never uploaded.

**Workshop themes** may include system and controller imagery, with these mitigations:

* Uploads that carry device imagery must set a content tag.
* Kouch's store page and marketing never feature such themes.
* Kouch checks a remote item blocklist, so an item can be pulled from every client quickly.
* The upload terms state that uploaders must own, or have the rights to, what they upload.

## Consequences

* CLAUDE.md ground rule 1 gains this exception and points to this ADR.
* If Valve or a rights holder objects, the fallback is to disable the device-imagery slots for Workshop themes. Users' local images keep working.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/docs/adr/0009-imagery-in-workshop-themes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
