# Typing with a controller

Type names, paths and keys with a controller, using Steam's keyboard or Kouch's own.

When a text box needs typing, like a folder path, a theme name or a key, highlight it and press **A**. A keyboard opens on screen.

## Which keyboard

Choose in **Settings › Controllers › Typing with a controller**:

| Choice                                       | What happens                                                               |
| -------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Steam's keyboard, else Kouch's** (default) | Steam's on-screen keyboard when Steam can show it, otherwise Kouch's.      |
| **Kouch's keyboard**                         | Always Kouch's.                                                            |
| **Steam's keyboard**                         | Always asks Steam, and still falls back to Kouch's if Steam can't show it. |

If you asked for Steam's keyboard and nothing appears, Kouch shows **No keyboard?** for a few seconds. Press **Y** (**Kouch keyboard**) to open Kouch's instead.

**On the Steam Deck in Game Mode,** Steam's keyboard can't open over a non-Steam game, so Kouch opens its own. You can still bring up Steam's by hand with the **Steam** button + **X**.

## Kouch's keyboard

Move over the keys and press **A** to type the highlighted key. The buttons have shortcuts:

| Button      | Does                                             |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **A**       | Type the highlighted key                         |
| **B**       | Delete (hold to keep deleting)                   |
| **Y**       | Space                                            |
| **X**       | Shift: once for one capital, twice for caps lock |
| **LB / RB** | Move the text cursor left / right                |
| **Start**   | Done, keeping the text                           |

The row under the keys has **Symbols** / **Letters**, **Space**, **Move left**, **Move right**, **Delete** and **Done**. The **✕** cancels and leaves the text as it was. Number boxes only show numbers.

## With a real keyboard or a touch screen

* A **physical keyboard** just types into the highlighted box. The arrow keys, **Enter** and **Esc** keep moving around.
* **Clicking** a box with the mouse puts the text cursor in it.
* **Tapping** a box on a touch screen opens the on-screen keyboard.
