# Motion

How motion reaches your games, which players get it, and how to recalibrate it.

Kouch passes the motion sensors of your controllers (tilt and turn) to the emulator, so games that use motion work with the controllers you already have. **Every player can have motion**: all 8 seats.

## Which players get motion

* **A controller with motion sensors gets motion by itself** when it joins.
* The **motion badge** on a player's box shows it:
  * **Motion assigned:** solid, with the slot number.
  * **Motion slot kept for this seat. This controller has no motion sensor:** dimmed. The seat keeps its motion slot, but the controller in it has nothing to send.
  * **Motion not assigned:** no motion for this seat.
* **To turn it on or off for yourself,** press **X** (**Motion**) on the Players screen, or on your row in the Quick Menu's **Players** panel during a game.

Which of its players an emulator reads motion for is part of its emulator profile. Most profiles give motion to the first players.

## Recalibrate

If the game drifts or thinks the controller is tilted when it's resting, recalibrate:

1. **Put the controller down on a flat surface.**
2. Open **Settings › Controllers**, choose your player under **Test a controller** and choose **Recalibrate motion**. Kouch shows **Hold still…** for about a second.

During a game, the Quick Menu's **Controller tools › Recalibrate motion** does the same for the controller that opened the menu.

## Where motion comes from

* **Started from Steam** (recommended), Kouch reads motion through Steam Input. That covers every controller Steam reads motion from, including the Steam Controller and the Steam Deck.
* **Without Steam Input,** Kouch reads motion directly from controllers your system supports.

## Point at Kouch with motion

Motion can also move a cursor in Kouch's own menus. See [Point with motion](/controllers/pointer.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.kouch.dev/controllers/motion.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
